Mastering the Five-Part Essay

(Grades 6th - 10th)

The "Mastering the Five-Part Essay" course is to support students with the essential skills and techniques needed to excel in academic writing which is the cornerstone for effective communication. Throughout this course, students will learn how to craft clear, coherent, and compelling essays following this widely recognized format.

 

Course Outline

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the introduction, three body paragraphs, and conclusion that make up the five-part essay.

  • Develop strong thesis statements: Learn how to create concise and focused thesis statements that effectively guide the essay's content

  • Create engaging introductions: Craft attention-grabbing introductions that introduce the topic and provide necessary context for the reader.

  • Master body paragraph development: Learn to construct well-organized body paragraphs with clear topic sentences, supporting details, and transitions.

  • Incorporate evidence and examples: Understand the importance of evidence and learn how to incorporate quotes, statistics, and examples to support arguments.

  • Write effective conclusions: Develop conclusions that summarize key points, restate the thesis, and leave a lasting impression on the reader.

  • Revise and edit essays: Gain proficiency in the revision and editing process to improve clarity, coherence, and overall essay quality.

  • Expose students to diverse essay types: Apply the five-part essay structure to various essay types, such as persuasive, argumentative, informative, and analytical essays

  • Develop time management and writing strategies: Acquire techniques for managing time effectively, conducting research, and organizing thoughts to streamline the writing process.

 

Course Format: This course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, in-class discussions, writing workshops, peer reviews, and individual writing assignments. Students will have access to various learning resources, including writing guides, sample essays, and online research tools.

 

Assessment Methods: Students will be evaluated through a combination of assignments, class participation, assessment,  peer evaluations, and a final essay project. These assessments will measure students' understanding of the five-part essay structure, their ability to apply it to different essay types, and their overall writing skills.

 

The class is an eight-month program, with the option of sessions for Fall, Winter and Spring.  Our class is taught with a ratio of 8:1.
